BYU is turning 150 this coming Thursday. Exactly a century and a half ago, on Oct. 16, 1875, the deed of trust was signed for the founding of Brigham Young Academy. The first classes began 2½ months later, in January 1876.

In honor of BYU’s 150^th anniversary, electrical engineering professor Greg Nordin and student Callum Galloway have created 150 microscopic replicas of existing LDS temples, all on a 12-by-19 millimeter microchip. Each of these unique temples — 150 different floor plans to celebrate 150 years of BYU — is less than a grain of rice in length.

BYU President Shane Reese invited students Tuesday to help increase the light in their lives and on campus by sharing their gifts of light during the university’s 150th year.

The devotional, titled “Celebrating Gifts of Light,” kicked off a year of celebratory activities and events surrounding the school’s upcoming 150th anniversary. University administrators, faculty, alumni and students all participated in the devotional program, which utilized music, stories, quotes from Church leaders — past and present — and video to share examples of “the special light” that characterizes Brigham Young University.

Students filled the Marriott Center on Sept. 9 for Brigham Young University’s sesquicentennial devotional, marking 150 years since the school’s founding.

Plans for the BYU 150th anniversary celebration have been in the works for more than four years with numerous people involved. This year will be packed with celebrations including a new BYU creamery ice cream flavor, 150 swag and a whole lot of service.
